Booster Sets FAQs

A booster set comprises of one or more pumps, pump controller(s), break tank, manifolds, valves, etc. It is designed to increase the water pressure within a building where the existing incoming mains or feed tank is not capable of supplying sufficient water pressure.

In a commercial installation, the industry recommends installing at least a twin pump set as duty standby. A standby pump will keep a continuous supply to the building if the duty pump fails. Most twin pump booster sets with variable speed drives will alternate between duty to standby pump within a fixed period, or pump starts.

Current regulations state that if a booster pump draws more than 12 litres a minute, it cannot connect directly to the mains water supply and must have a break tank.  

 

To know what size break tank you need will depend on a few factors, the main one being the demand of the building/pumps. Other factors include installation space requirements, friction loss, peak demand, etc.

As a general rule, Having a break tank that can keep up with demand and is turned over more frequently is better than having 100s of litres of water that doesn’t move, creating a breeding ground for bacteria, etc.

To know what size pump(s) you need will depend on a few factors.
1) Head
You will need to calculate the height from where the booster pump will be installed to the highest output in the building?

2) Flow rate
You will need to know what type and how many outlets there are.
Also, what is the likely hood of all outlets being used at the same time?

A CAT 5 booster set is a booster set with a break tank that complies with current fluid category 5 regulations and is complete with an AB air gap. The booster set is designed for connection to the mains water supply and provide backflow protection against a category 5 fuild.

Fluid representing a serious health hazard because of the concentration of pathogenic organisms, radioactive or very toxic substances, including any fluid which contains:

(a) faecal material or other human waste (b) butchery or other animal waste; or (c) pathogens from any other source

Fluid Category 4

Fluid which represents a significant health hazard because of the concentration of toxic substances, including any fluid which contains:
(a) chemical, carcinogenic substances or pesticides (including insecticides and herbicides), or

(b) environmental organisms of potential health significance

Actual Capacity = volume of the tank to working level, valve shut-off set level

Nominal Capacity = volume of the tank to the top, full to brim

The booster set will be delivered to site with a large delivery lorry (average dimensions, length 10.5 meters x width 2.5meters x height 4 meters).


It will be delivered on one or more pallets depending on the size of the booster set. The booster set will be dismantled to a certain degree to prevent damage and to be able to fit on the pallet(s).

In all cases, it will be delivered to the curbside. The customer’s responsibility is to move the booster set from this point to be where it will be installed/stored. Although most booster sets can be manoeuvred with 4 to 5 people, it is highly recommended to have a machine on site that can do the manoeuvering.

All booster sets need to be protected from the weather and freezing.

We highly recommend having your booster set commissioned. Commissioning makes sure that everything is installed correctly and to the manufacturer’s specifications. In the unlikely event of a problem with the booster set, this prevents any warranty issues. Most of all, it is great peace of mind to know that it is installed correctly.

The Water Booster Pumps

Variable Speed Drives

To give the booster sets excellent energy efficiency, each booster pump incorporates a variable speed pump controller. The purpose of the pump controller is to continually vary the pump motor speed to match the changing flow demand pattern, whilst maintaining constant system pressure.

This mode of operation, adjusting the pump’s motor speed to the building’s flow requirements, reduces the power consumption and extends the pump’s life dramatically.

The pump controller is mounted in the discharge pipework. The body is constructed from a techno-polymer suitable for potable water applications.

It has an LCD display to indicate system overview and operating parameters. Complete with dry running, over temperature and over current protection and alarms.

 

The Break Tanks

Our booster set break tanks are manufactured to BS 13280:2001 standard using high-quality glass reinforced polyester (GRP) resins.

They come with 25mm of encapsulated foam insulation and an 18mm thick encapsulated plywood baseboard.

The tanks are WRAS approved and fully compliant with fluid category 5 complete with type AB air gap back-flow prevention.

They are fitted with a raised chamber and 1″ equilibrium ball valve and drop arm.

Delivery To Site

Our booster set and break tanks are delivered to site on a pallet with a large delivery lorry (average dimensions, length 10.5 meters x width 2.5meters x height 4 meters).

However, if your delivery access is restricted and/or isn’t suitable to accept a large lorry. Please contact us to have your booster set delivered on a smaller vehicle for an additional cost.

In both cases, the system will be delivered on a pallet to the curbside. It is the customer’s responsibility to move the system from this point to where it will be installed/stored.
